Cary Sparrow: From Navy Nuclear Submarines to Building WageScape

What does operating a nuclear submarine have in common with building a global technology company? More than you might think.

In this episode of Oscar Mike Radio, I sat down with Cary Sparrow, a U.S. Navy submarine veteran and founder of WageScape, to discuss military leadership, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, and how the skills developed during military service can lead to opportunities in the civilian business world.

Cary’s journey took him from operating nuclear submarines to consulting, corporate leadership, and eventually founding a technology company that analyzes labor-market information worldwide.

His story reminds us that leaving military service doesn’t mean leaving leadership or the mission behind.

From Navy Submarines to Corporate Leadership

Serving aboard a nuclear submarine requires discipline, technical expertise, teamwork, and the ability to make decisions under pressure.

Cary explained how those experiences shaped his leadership philosophy and prepared him for challenges he would face after leaving the Navy.

His transition into civilian life included consulting and corporate leadership positions, where he continued developing the skills that would eventually help him become an entrepreneur.

We discussed how military experience can prepare veterans for business leadership, even when the industries and responsibilities look completely different.

The environment may change, but the ability to lead people, solve problems, and accomplish a mission remains valuable.

What Is WageScape?

One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was learning about WageScape, the company Cary founded to help organizations better understand the global labor market.

WageScape collects and normalizes labor-market data from more than 800,000 career websites across over 240 countries and territories, according to Cary.

That is an enormous amount of information.

We discussed how collecting and organizing employment data can help businesses better understand hiring activity, workforce trends, and the changing employment landscape.

What interested me was the challenge of turning massive amounts of information into something organizations can actually use.

It’s one thing to collect data. It’s another to make that data meaningful.

Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Entrepreneurship

Artificial intelligence was another major topic during our conversation.

Cary shared his perspective on how AI is changing the way businesses collect, process, and analyze information.

We also discussed what these developments mean for entrepreneurs who want to build companies in an increasingly technology-driven economy.

AI can create opportunities to work more efficiently, identify patterns, and develop services that would have been difficult to deliver at scale just a few years ago.

But technology alone doesn’t build a successful company.

Leadership, sound decision-making, adaptability, and understanding the people you serve still matter.

Building a Fully Virtual, Cloud-Based Company

Cary also explained his decision to build WageScape as a fully virtual, cloud-based company.

Rather than relying on a traditional office environment, his business operates through technology and remote collaboration.

We discussed how remote work can create opportunities for entrepreneurs to build teams, access talent, and operate beyond geographic boundaries.

For veterans transitioning into civilian careers, the growth of remote work and technology-driven businesses may also open doors that weren’t previously available.

The challenge is understanding how to take advantage of those opportunities while maintaining communication, accountability, and a strong team culture.

Cary Sparrow’s Advice for Veteran Entrepreneurs

Of all the lessons Cary shared, one stood out because of its simplicity.

Build your network and never be afraid to ask for help.

Military service teaches us the importance of teamwork. No successful mission is accomplished entirely alone.

The same principle applies to entrepreneurship.

Whether you’re launching your first business, transitioning into a new industry, or trying to solve a difficult problem, relationships matter.

Finding mentors, building professional connections, and being willing to ask questions can make a tremendous difference.

Sometimes the most valuable resource isn’t another piece of technology or additional funding. It’s someone who has already faced the challenge you’re trying to overcome.

The Mission Continues After Military Service

What I enjoyed most about this conversation was seeing how Cary took the leadership and technical skills developed during his Navy career and carried them into entrepreneurship.

From nuclear submarines to global labor-market intelligence, his career demonstrates that military experience can provide a foundation for opportunities that may not have been imaginable while wearing the uniform.

For veterans considering entrepreneurship, Cary’s story offers encouragement and a practical reminder: you don’t have to figure everything out by yourself.

Build relationships. Stay adaptable. Keep learning. And don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Cary, thank you for joining me on Oscar Mike Radio, sharing your journey, and showing how military leadership can continue making an impact in the business world.

The uniform comes off, but the mission continues.
