Mike Klein: Army Veteran, Independent Congressional Candidate, and Advocate for Change
In this episode of Oscar Mike Radio, I sat down with Mike Klein, a U.S. Army veteran and independent candidate for Florida’s 3rd Congressional District, to discuss military service, veteran healthcare, political reform, and his decision to seek public office.
Mike’s journey took him from the United States Military Academy at West Point to serving during Operation Desert Storm. Those experiences shaped his perspective on leadership, war, responsibility, and the role of government.
Our conversation wasn’t just about politics. It was about how military service can influence someone’s understanding of public service long after the uniform comes off.
From West Point to Operation Desert Storm
Mike shared his experiences attending West Point and serving in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Storm.
We discussed how military service influenced his views on armed conflict, leadership, and the responsibility elected officials carry when making decisions that affect service members and their families.
For veterans, these issues are personal. Decisions made in Washington can have consequences that last long after a military operation ends.
Mike explained how his experiences continue to influence his approach to public policy and his desire to serve in a different capacity.
Why Mike Klein Is Running as an Independent
One of the central topics of our conversation was Mike’s decision to run for Congress as an independent candidate in Florida’s 3rd Congressional District.
Mike expressed concerns about the influence of money and special interests in American politics, along with what he sees as limitations of the traditional two-party system.
We discussed why he believes independent candidates can offer voters another perspective and how his military background influences his approach to political leadership.
Whether someone agrees or disagrees with his positions, I believe understanding why a veteran chooses to enter public service is a conversation worth having.
Veteran Healthcare and Warrior Centric Health
Another important part of our discussion focused on veteran healthcare.
Mike talked about his brother’s recovery from severe combat injuries and how witnessing that experience influenced his understanding of the challenges wounded service members and their families can face.
Those experiences helped inspire Mike to co-found Warrior Centric Health, an initiative focused on improving healthcare for military-connected populations.
We discussed the importance of understanding veterans’ unique healthcare needs and ensuring that those who served can access appropriate care and support.
For me, veteran healthcare is an issue that deserves attention regardless of political affiliation.
Ranked-Choice Voting and Campaign Finance Reform
Mike also shared his views on potential changes to the American political system.
Among the reforms he supports are ranked-choice voting and changes to campaign finance laws.
We explored why he believes these proposals could address some of the problems he sees in elections and political representation.
These are subjects that generate debate across the political spectrum, and hearing directly from a candidate provides an opportunity to better understand the reasoning behind his positions.
Military Service, Leadership, and the Next Mission
One theme that continues to come up in my conversations on Oscar Mike Radio is that military service doesn’t necessarily end someone’s commitment to serving others.
For some veterans, that next mission involves entrepreneurship, nonprofit work, education, or advocacy. For others, it means pursuing elected office.
Mike Klein’s journey from West Point and Operation Desert Storm to veteran healthcare advocacy and a congressional campaign is another example of how military experiences can shape someone’s path after service.
Thank you, Mike, for joining me on Oscar Mike Radio and sharing your military story, your work with Warrior Centric Health, and your reasons for seeking public office.
