264 – Indigenous Veterans of Turtle Island Monument

264 – Indigenous Veterans of Turtle Island Monument

I had the honor to talk with Native Americans Loren Spears, Narragansett Tribal Nation and Charlie Smith Jr, Seaconke Wampanoag Tribal Nation about the Indigenous Veterans Monument being built at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter, Rhode Island.

As I said at the start of the conversation, doing Oscar Mike Radio just shows me how much I don’t know. I served with a couple of Native Americans but will confess that there is a lot for me to learn about many aspects of the Native American culture.

At the conclusion of our talk, it became clear that having a monument must happen. I went to the website and looked at the committee page. There was story after story of a family member’s or personal service to our country that was the reason for wanting to build this monument. The goal is $50,000.00 and the group has raised over half that amount.

Go to https://www.honoringindigenousvets.org/home to learn more or donate. I also have shirts for sale($25.00 – Free Shipping). If you buy a shirt between now and December 1st, I will put you in a drawing for the Oscar Mike Radio Supply Drop.

Thank you Loren and Charlie for talking with me about this worthy cause. I can’t wait to see this come together. I have to give a shout-out to Marine Corps Veteran Armand Perreault and Army Veteran Briana Auclair for helping me do this. It was a complete team effort!

167 – Danielle Rocco – Devoted to Soldier

I had the pleasure of talking with Danielle Rocco remote and on location. She is a Marine Mom, transformation coach, speaker and now author of, “Devoted to a Soldier.” She talked with me about her work with Veterans Advocacy.

The question has to be what hasn’t Danielle done? Professional ballerina, business owner, author, filmmaker, coach and now Veterans Advocate, Danielle believes anyone can make positive change in their lives at anytime.

Devoted to a Soldier is about develop strong relationships. The strongest being with one’s self. As I listened to Danielle talk about this during our time, I felt that I was on that path. Getting reminded of what I need to do daily was coaching at its best.

You can go to Danielle’s website – https://devotedtoasoldier.com/ to learn more about her documentary and Veteran’s Advocacy work.

165 – Jim Tough 600 – 22 for 22 Charlie Mike

Jim Tough has been doing pushups for 600 Days to raise awareness about Veterans Suicide and the harm PTSD does to people. It is more than just pushups though, Jim relays an inspirational message to people who need to hear it. Sometimes these messages are a NCOs proverbial boot in the south end but they are from the heart. I have learned a lot from listening to the messages of the day.

Jim doesn’t do these for the attention. The goal is to get to a point where he doesn’t have to do them at all. The need is real. Please do not use a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Veteran getting a hair cut!

I went to the 2019 Greater Boston Stand Down put on by the New England Center and Home for Veterans. I met some nurses from the Greater VA Medical Center and they started getting me right. Good stuff.
